Fall is my favorite time of the year for many reasons, but mainly because it is the start of the Nebraska Husker football season. I have been a loyal fan as far back as I can remember. My Dad had season tickets and he would sometimes take me to the game when I was a kid. He would be so excited to watch them play and back then, our football team was almost unbeatable and we won championships. The team was unstoppable and the hype was incredible.
So today, things are a little different for these Husker players. Nebraska has been rebuilding their program for the football team and we have changed coaches multiple times over the last several years. It is fair to say that the team has struggled and those "rebuilding years" continue on.
I drink the Kool-Aid every year. I want so much for these young guys to have the winning season that they deserve. Coach Rhule tells us, "That it is an honor to be the head coach at Nebraska" and I believe him. He said at his press conference the other day that, "We are on the cusp of being a really good team and these players have tremendous work ethic". It is an old team mixed with a young team and they are learning together and trying "to dominate what they can control". His program is based on you earning your spot and he challenges the players to work harder every practice. "We win by how we play the game, not always by what it shows on the scoreboard". I wish for all of them a season that they can be proud of and if they do their best - that will happen.
To drink the Kool-Aid is defined as, "extreme dedication to a cause or purpose - blind obedience or loyalty to a cause". (Did you know that Kool-Aid was actually invented in Hastings, Nebraska?) That is pretty much how I feel about Husker football. On Saturday I will be in the stadium enjoying the festivities and hoping for a Husker win. There is no better sound then hearing the National Anthem and listening to the jets fly over the stadium. I guarantee when that tunnel song starts playing I will be up on my feet screaming and yelling in anticipation of the first kick-off. Win or lose, I am here for the love of the game and by the way - my favorite color of Kool-Aid is RED!
Remember.....be grateful.
Until we talk again.......
